Literacy Not So Fun Facts
How do many states estimate the number of prison beds that will be needed in the future?
They  look at 3rd and 4th grade reading scores.

85 percent of all juveniles who interface with the juvenile court system are illiterate.

One child in four grows up not knowing how to read.

A child from a middle class family, entering grade one, has been exposed to 1200-1700
hours of one-on-one picture book reading time with an adult. A child from a low income
family entering grade one has been exposed to around 25 hours of one-on-one picture
book reading time.

An adult from a low income household has a vocabulary equal to that of a 3 year old from a
middle class family in length of word and number of words used.

The cost of illiteracy to the United States is greater than the cost of “The War on Drugs”,
“The War on Crime” and “The War on Terror” combined.

About one in 20 adults in the United States is not literate in English.
"One of the
greatest gifts adults
can give to their
offsprings and to
their society is to
read to children."

Volunteer Appreciation Celebration:
On the afternoon of January 28, 2010, Rolling Readers hosted a celebration to honor all of
our outstanding volunteers. Entertainment was provided by
Brevard's Best Dance Troupe
and Guido Scarton shared lifestyle words of wisdom. Dr. Binggeli thanked those in
attendance for their generosity and support of Brevard County's children. It was an
inspiring event, as Years of Service awards were handed out to the volunteers. With their
continued efforts, Rolling Readers is now in its thirteenth year of serving the children in
Brevard County. Thank you.

“Books Come Alive” for the Boy Scouts
The Central Florida Boy Scout Council had two one week summer day camps at Wickham
Park. The theme was “Books Come Alive.” Rolling Readers was pleased to provide readers
to introduce the works of authors Mark Twain, Mary Pope Osborne, Gary Paulsen and
Roald Dahl.  A special thank you goes to volunteer Ricia McLennan, for so generously
giving of her time. Staff members Jane Kennedy, Bonnie Daniels and Susan Thomas also
contributed to the reader pool. There are now dens of Boy Scouts with their noses in
books doing a bit of summer reading.

Turn Off the TV and Talk to Your Child
Limit television and video games. The more young children speak, the more brain growth
they experience. In an article from
USA Today by Liz Szabo, it was revealed that more time
in front of the television means less words are spoken by both parent and child. Although
children are hearing language on TV, it is not as effective as language spoken between
parent and child. Earlier studies suggest that infants who view a lot of television recognize
fewer words. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies under two
should not be exposed to any television

There is a 32 million
word difference
between what a child
in a professional
home hears and
what a child from a
welfare home hears.
According to Jim
Trelease, a reading
expert, “if ‘No Child
Left Behind’ expects
the teacher to get
the welfare child
caught-up, she will
have to speak 10
words a second for
900 hours just to
reach the 32 million
mark by year’s end,”
