"We believe that a love of children and a love of books go hand in hand." ~Robert Condon
Rolling Readers started on the Space Coast in 1997. We are part of a grassroots campaign to develop children’s desire to be lifelong readers by providing them with high-impact program materials, books and volunteer services. Since 1997, we have grown to include hundreds of volunteers who are now reading to children (prekindergarten-fourth grades) in Brevard County Title I elementary schools. Volunteers in the Read Aloud program read to children weekly, inspiring their minds, touching imaginations, developing language skills, and providing a positive impact on the lives of children. We also sponsor a unique Tutor/Mentor program. Volunteers go into a school for one hour each week, to work with four students (for 15-20 minutes each). Every student reads with an adult tutor one-on-one. The Grade-level Reading Intervention Program (G.R.I.P.) targets 8/9 year old children and involves innovative, weekly small group sessions conducted in a workshop format. Volunteers use learning activities that are hands-on and high interest to the students, reinforcing target reading skills. Training is provided, at various locations, for all three programs. Go to Events or to Home to click on to our training schedule. Volunteers are currently serving close to 8,000 students in 31 Title I public elementary schools.

A G.R.I.P.ing Story Congratulations to all of the volunteers and students who have made this program a success. As one student excitedly stated when he saw the boxes of games the first day, "This is great! Are we going to play games and which game are we going to play first?" Although this student, and the others too, soon realized that the games had an agenda of building reading skills, their enthusiasm never waned. Reading with enthusiasm is our agenda at Rolling Readers and this program offers the opportunity to find the fun in learning to read.
A Warm and Fuzzy from a Read Aloud Volunteer As I sat down and prepared to read on my last day in the classroom, I noticed a new student. When I asked him if he was new to the school, he said, "No, I'm just spending the day in here." Knowing this to be teacher code for, "I was being bad, so my teacher sent me in here, " I was quite surprised when he behaved perfectly the entire time I was reading and talking to the class. I was even more surprised (and almost in tears) when this "new student" came up to me as I prepared to leave, put his arm around me and said, "I knew you were going to be nice, 'cause all Rolling Readers are nice."
Touching and True Tutor/Mentor Story The Tutor team at Riviera Elementary had an international experience with a young boy from China. Fluent in Mandarin, he entered second grade knowing very few words in English. Starting in Level #1 in our Tutor/mentor book set, the tutors worked with him to improve his reading skills and his vocabulary. By year's end, the student could easily converse in English, had completed the twelve level reading program and was ready to take on third grade. The feelings of accomplishment were shared by the young boy and his tutor team. Way to go!
